What is covered?
Each child’s situation is unique.
Below are some examples of items covered:
- Service of professionals (orthopedagogue, special educator, occupational therapist, sexologist, speech therapist, etc.);
- Specialized respite for children with special needs;
- Support for assessment expenses (neuropsychological, psychoeducational, etc.);
- Specialized medical material;
- Adapted transportation;
- Support for the family (baby/children's items, food support, rent support, etc.);
- Therapies (art therapy, sand play therapy, animal-assisted therapy, etc.);
- Education support (homework assistance, educational materials, support staff, etc.);
- Etc.
**It is crucial to note that the CFI does not aim to replace existing services, programs, or funding.
***Additionally, requests should only cover a maximum period of one year. If the service is still required for the child after that time, a new and complete request must be submitted each year. An existing or previously-approved request does not guarantee that a request for new funding will be renewed or approved.
Who is Eligible?
All Inuit children from Nunavik, regardless of their place of residence in Canada, are eligible to receive funding from the Child First Initiative (CFI) Nunavik.
Children must meet the following two conditions:
- Be recognized by the Makivvik Corporation as beneficiaries of Nunavik.
- Be under the age of majority in the province or territory of residence.
Who Can Submit a Request?
The following may submit requests:
- Parents or guardians responsible for an Inuk child;
- An Inuk child who is 16 years or older, representing themselves (for all services);
- An Inuk child who is 14 years or older, representing themselves (for health services only);
- An authorized representative of the child, parent or guardian (the parent or guardian must give verbal or written consent in such cases).
- Organization providing products and, or services to Nunavik’s inuit child beneficiaries living on and off territory.
